Cheap Surf lessons!
If you’re newer to surfing, or simply want to “get back into the groove”– Surf Lessons in Southern California are the way to go! Our instructors at Corky Carroll’s surf school will show you the correct movements, like how to paddle/extend your arms, spring up like a cat, and the proper foot and body placement- before even wading into the water. Cheap surf lessons are not the way to go when learning how to surf!
We love what we do (we love teaching people how to surf)! We’re quite lucky to play on the beach, and represent the love of surfing in Orange County. And although we love, love, love testing “new waters” and challenges (and making sure you reach your goals)- Our #1 priority is your safety! We want to make sure our students have the best experience while learning how to surf, and know what to expect, one step-at-time.
So! What does that mean?
First off, here at Corky’s- We work with the California State Parks to receive our beach permit and we work with the City of Huntington Beach to receive a legal business license, allowing us to conduct private (and semi private) surf lessons. In a sense, we are “renting the beach.” We make sure that we are abiding by all requirements, and not breaking any laws (and putting anyone at risk), and potentially being kicked off the beach by the police. Check out why Bolsa Chica is the best location to learn how to surf Bolsa Chica State Beach
We also make sure we have the right insurance to protect us and you. Most cheap surf lessons do not have these qualifications. Just like we want to make sure our surf instructors are safe everyday- We want to make sure our students are just as protected! We do absolutely everything we can to have the most stress-free surfing lesson possible- but the Ocean is a wonderful creature, and sometimes she has other plans. We encourage light stretching before and after the class, drinking plenty of water beforehand, offer the best-fit/thickness of wetsuits, and the best board to fit your skill-level, and preference of riding stretching. This Frequently Asked Questions For Equipment will help you determine the best equipment to help you surf in no time.
If we all follow these suggestions/instructions, and have the correct permits & insurances- We are cruising for a happy day/weekend! Yet, unfortunately- Not all Surf Schools abide by these rules. Many “surfing Schools” on “discount websites” don’t have the proper insurance and permits to execute the safe-experience that students expect. That is why you should look into doing legal surf lesson with us Contact us
Websites we strongly encourage NOT going to:
Brads Deals
DealNews.com
FatWallet
Gotta Deal
Groupon
Living Social
RetailMeNot
Slick Deals
Craigslist (100% are all illegal) Very Dangerous
Oh no! Did you read Groupon, on the list above?! Unfortunately, yes. Although I am guilty of perusing Groupon for meal discounts, or DIY classes- I would never go to Groupon for an discounted activity like Surfing.
There are “Surf Classes” bragging that they give “the best lessons in Surf City,” at the cheapest price- but 90% of the time, these illegal surf schools don’t have the proper permits and insurances needed to legally teach safe lessons. Also, on another note- When these private & semi-private surf lessons are at a 50% markdown- the experience is not always set to the reviews/expectations. Go look at our Private Lessons Prices and Deals at Private Surf Lesson Prices
Again, although most these surf coaches love the water/lifestyle- these businesses are barely making any money through Groupon. The goal of using a discount site- is hoping the customer will come back (usually a 1 time use for discount), or tell their friends. Yet, if this discount site is overdone/overused, employees/businesses can become burnt out.
Please, read the reviews!
(see our reviews from yelp, here)
When looking on the Groupon site, there are many comments where the instructors were late- or parking was not specified, or there were too many students for 1 teacher (quite chaotic with younger kids). Here at Corky’s, we choose the safest beginner beach “Bolsa Chica State Beach.” We’ve been conducting surf lessons here for over 20 years, parking is welcoming, and there aren’t any aggressive locals. (Click to check out Bolsa!)
Overall, we want you to have a wonderful time, that keeps you craving for more! We want beginner surfers to have so much fun, and return-surfers to regain confidence, and pick-up this amazing hobby/sport, that we love SO much.
Here is what we suggest!
- Research! Give the different surf camps a ring!
- Are the surf lessons ran by a local business? Do they know the waters/beaches?
- Do the businesses have the correct permits?
- Do they have insurance for them, AND you?
- What waivers do they ask you to fill out?
- Can they explain an action plan, for if someone does get hurt?
Also, please watch for these signs/red flags:
- Are they asking you to meet at a “off-site” location before going to the beach!!! Stay Away!! Illegal!!!
- Are they not allowing you to sign the waiver and pay on the sand, where the surf lesson is taking place?! Stay Away!! Illegal!!!
If one of the above are happening, there’s a good chance that the illegal school is avoiding conspicuous behavior, to avoid getting a ticket or being removed from the beach. These businesses do not want you to sign a waiver, or do any type of money transaction on the beach, because this would be visible proof of their illegal behavior.
As I’m sure our readers understand; We’d love to have you. We’d love to connect you to our talented coaches, and give your family a few days at our Huntington Beach location, that they’ll never forget. Or perhaps the possibility of meeting for an all inclusive surf camp, in Costa Rica! Yet, more than anything- we want our future customers to be knowledgeable with what the Surf Market in Orange County has to offer (and to understand “the do’s” and “the dont’s”).
